We have exciting news to share!
Dear Henrico Citizen reader,
I’m writing this morning to share some exciting news!
We’ve just hired our first full-time reporter in our 20-year history, and I want to introduce her to you.
Her name is Anna Bryson, and she will be joining us from Florida (where she has worked as a journalist for The Daily Sun in Port Charlotte, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and Creative Loafing in Tampa Bay) in early June to cover education. Anna is coming to us thanks to Report for America, a national program that helps place journalists at outlets nationally and in Puerto Rico and then provides matching funds – dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 apiece – to each participating news outlet to fund their salaries.
We applied for this program and were the only Virginia news outlet selected this year as a new host newsroom. We’re proud of this distinction and excited to welcome Anna to our small but dedicated team.
At the Citizen, Anna will cover a wide variety of education topics, with a special focus on educational equity, through the lenses of race, geography, social class and economy, among others. Education has never been more important, and we believe we’re uniquely positioned to expand upon our coverage of it here in meaningful ways through Anna’s in-depth reporting.
Do you have an idea about an education topic Anna should cover for us? E-mail your thoughts to me at tom@henricocitizen.com, and I’ll share them with her in the coming weeks.
And if you share my belief in the importance of education – and the importance of fair, informative journalism that examines issues of equity within it – I hope you’ll consider making a tax-deductible contribution to welcome Anna to the Henrico Citizen and to help fund her coverage.
All the best,
Tom Lappas, publisher
