Proposed ‘Tourism Improvement District’ in Richmond region would add 2% tax on most hotel rooms
A proposal designed to generate new revenue for regional tourism efforts in Metro Richmond would levy a 2% tax on hotel rooms at all hotels with more than 41 rooms in Henrico and five other localities.
The “Tourism Improvement District” plan is a joint proposal from Richmond Region Tourism and local hotel operators themselves. The money raised through the tax – anticipated to total $8.2 million in the first year, if approved – would be used to expand visitation and hotel occupancy through marketing and sales efforts, according to the two groups.
