Our work, powered by you
Hi reader,
This week is a big one for us at the Henrico Citizen: it’s our 23rd anniversary as Henrico's independent, nonpartisan source of local news and the start of our weeklong fall membership drive. You'll see a bunch of emails from me this week as a result; I don't love sending them, and you probably don't love receiving them, but I hope you’ll bear with me.
We're conducting this drive because what we do matters to this community, and we want to keep doing it.
Simply, the community requires it. Every dollar you give stays here and directly supports the work that we do. Our goal is to add 200 donors this week.
I started the Citizen in 2001 because I believed in the value of trustworthy, independent local news and the role that it can play in connecting a community – and I still do. It’s evident that you do, too: last month, more than 111,000 of you visited our website, and in the past 18 months our free daily weekday email newsletter subscriber list has nearly doubled (to almost 26,000 people).
We operate on the core principle that access to fair local news coverage is a fundamental human right.
It’s why we have never charged for access to any of our coverage. But a business cannot exist without reliable, sustainable sources of revenue. So today, and this week, I’m asking you to consider the value of the Henrico Citizen in your life during the past 23 days, 23 weeks, 23 months, or (for some of you) 23 years.
Have we helped inform you about this community? Have you taken action based upon something you read in the Citizen? Have you learned something you didn’t know about Henrico? Have you developed a stronger sense of connection to this community because of our coverage?
If the answer is yes, I hope you will consider making a financial contribution to support our work.
Thank you, in advance, for your readership, consideration and support!
Yours in community,
Tom Lappas, publisher
