Help us report on equity in education
Help fund our in-depth coverage of education in Henrico County
Equity in education – it’s something no one opposes, but how equitable is education in Henrico County? We want to find out, by taking a deep dive into the issue, analyzing data, talking with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
That’s one of the many reasons we’re so excited to be welcoming a new full-time education reporter for a minimum of two years, thanks to Report for America, a national journalism service program that helps place full-time reporters in communities nationally.
Our new reporter will begin in June and will become our first full-time staff reporter in our nearly 20-year history.
This is a big deal for us, but more importantly, it’s a big deal for this community. I’ve covered Henrico County for 23 years (the past 19+ as the owner of the Citizen), and a consistent topic throughout those years has been the perception that educational outcomes in Henrico vary by geographical location. For example, Eastern Henrico schools typically don’t reflect the same achievement levels of their West End counterparts – but they also serve more students who live in poverty.
There are overlapping issues of societal class, economy and geography at play here, among others – and our new reporter will cut through perceptions and pre-existing notions to find the truth and tell it – good, bad or somewhere in between.
Along the way, this reporter also will expand upon our overall Henrico education coverage, which already is the best and most comprehensive available of the county.
We’re not resting on our achievements of the past year or the past 20 years – we’re doubling down and investing to bring you more personal coverage, more valuable coverage and more overall coverage for the next two years (or more).
But to do that, we need your help. Report for America is matching dollar for dollar every donation we receive to help fund this new reporter’s position – up to $25,000.
Quality, impactful journalism like this requires a meaningful investment. Education matters to all of us. It shapes so many aspects of Henrico County.
HenricoCitizen.com averages nearly 70,000 unique visitors each month. If even a third of those visitors contributed just $1 apiece, we’d reach our goal. Can you help?
We are ever thankful for your consideration – and your readership.
Many thanks,
