Everyone needs and deserves a chance at a literate life

Did you know that 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. struggle to read basic sentences?*
Being able to read well may be second nature for you, as it is for millions. But some adults do not have the luxury of reading for pleasure or to learn. With your support, we can provide low-literate adults with the skills to help them learn and enjoy reading.
You have the power to make a difference in the life of someone in your community by becoming an adult literacy tutor. The READ Center needs volunteers who are willing to tutor students in reading and writing. As a volunteer tutor, you’ll receive training and have the support of READ Center staff. You’ll join a welcoming community of volunteers and teachers willing to share their knowledge and passion for making a difference.
Financial contributions make it possible for The READ Center to offer literacy classes and tutoring to students free of charge. Your gift will make a difference in the life of someone who struggles to read to a child, to read the newspaper, to read street signs, to read job advertisements, and to read medical directives. Everyone needs and deserves a chance at a literate life. Your support makes a difference.
Do you know someone that could benefit from The READ Center’s services? We know that it is difficult for some students to take the first step. We offer classroom and small group instruction in supportive, caring environments. Encourage your friend or loved one to call us at 804-288-9930 to enroll.
