Black Men Read’s ‘Lit at the Crib’ campaign helps overcome reading hurdles for students, families
Situated in front of packed book shelf, Black Men Read founder and president Demetrius Frazier recalls how the Central Virginia nonprofit went from a quest to find Black role models to a fast-growing program that has partnered with a number of middle schools and high schools in Henrico County.
“We started in 2018 between myself and my cohort, Lance Adams,” Frazier explained. “We started out as trying to just build together a little bit of a group, one to read books, start a book club.”
Hello from Henrico’s new education reporter
After spending six hours sitting on the grassy shoulder of I-95 with my cat and a broken down moving truck, I’ve made it to Henrico.
I moved here last week from Sarasota, Fla. to take on this role as education reporter for the Henrico Citizen. I’ll be covering a wide variety of education topics, with a special focus on educational equity, through the lenses of race, geography, social class and economy, among others.

As a second-grader in Mrs. Bruce’s class at Short Pump Elementary School, Elise Matsuura had one of the best years of her young life. She marveled at the way her teacher’s handwriting always seemed so perfect and how she cleaned the chalkboard in a very specific and equally impeccable way every time – but mostly she recalls how everyone in the class felt included.
