A 'Turn 2' Tuesday
Hi Reader,
It’s Day 2 of our anniversary week, and since we couldn’t afford to get an endorsement from Taylor Swift as we turn 22, you’re stuck reading these daily emails from me. (My apologies.)
All week, we’re celebrating our 22 years of connecting this community with local coverage, while we also work to create a more financially sustainable future to fund the coverage Henrico readers like you will require for the next 22.
And since I’m a baseball guy, today’s message has a baseball theme.
We’re calling it ‘Turn 2 Tuesday,’ and each time someone contributes at least $22 to the Citizen today, we’ll turn that into two free vouchers next spring good for any 2024 Richmond Flying Squirrels game. It’s that simple!
(This is also a good time to note that the Squirrels, a longtime partner of ours, have a playoff game at The Diamond tonight. Get your tickets here and support our home team, even if they are playing the affiliate of my Detroit Tigers!)
At the Citizen, we’ve never charged anyone to read any of our coverage. These days, that’s rare among news publications. And though we believe that access to fair local news coverage is a fundamental human right, the truth is that our company can’t survive without sustasinable revenue.
I’ve yet to meet a reporter who will work for free, and in addition to paying our current staff members fair wages, we’d actually like to add at least one more reporter to cover this community the way it deserves to be covered.
That’s where your support can make a huge difference.
Last month, more than 130,000 unique users visited HenricoCitizen.com. If each of them had given just $1, we could have hired two full-time reporters and a handful of freelance reporters for a full year.
If the work we do matters to you – if you read our emails, follow us on social media, visit our website or listen to my daily weekday podcast and learn something as a result – I hope you’ll consider chipping in to support us today.
Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and support!
Yours in community,
Tom Lappas, publisher
P.S. – All week, whenever you make a contribution of any amount to the Citizen, you’ll be entered in a drawing for one of several larger prizes at the end of the week.
