It’s a simple mantra, isn’t it? It’s also one that has driven our efforts as Henrico County’s hometown news source since 2001 and why we believe so strongly in the importance of local journalism.
A smarter community is a better community.
The more you know about this place, the more equipped you are to play an active role in it. Citizenship is about connecting those around us for a greater good – strengthening the fibers that tie us all together. It’s about developing pride in the place we call home and working to leave a positive mark on it.
In Henrico County, there are many things that can divide us; geography, economy, perspective, to name just a few. But there are far more that can connect us.
It starts with a clear understanding of the issues that matter to Henricoans – and not just to some of us, but to all of us. It requires that we share a fundamental and factual understanding of where we are as a county right now, so that we can take part in meaningful conversations about where we ought to go next – even if we disagree.
How can we solve our challenges if we don’t even know they exist? How can we celebrate our successes and grasp our opportunities if we don’t know about them, either?
At the Henrico Citizen, we aspire to contribute in significant ways to this process. For more than 21 years, we’ve provided trustworthy, fair, perspective-rich coverage of this county, helping to inform tens of thousands of people each month about Henrico’s strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities.
But we need your help to continue serving this important role for our community.
To ensure our financial sustainability in 2023 and beyond, we need your support. Can you contribute $5 or $10 a month? Or will you consider joining our new Citizen Collective membership program, which comes with a variety of benefits? Every contribution helps.
With your assistance, we’ll be able to keep our coverage free for all of our 65,000+ readers each month – and expand upon it, too.
Because a smarter Henrico truly is a better Henrico – for all of us.
Yours in community,
Tom Lappas, publisher
Tom, we Henrico citizens are fortunate to have you. Thank you for all you do to bring the facts to light.
“Strong local journalism bolsters our democracy in several important ways. The most essential one is that a local source of news helps create a shared culture. We live in a time when all sorts of political, social, and public health issues are tearing away at our notion of community.” - https://www.bushcenter.org/catalyst/restoring-trust-in-institutions/mckenzie-strong-newspapers-strong-democracy
